Make it

Yield: About 3 cups · 12 servings of roughly ¼ cup

Timing: 15 minutes prep · at least 1 hour chilling

Ingredients

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened just enough to beat
  • ¾ cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 cup plain canned pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon, plus a pinch for garnish
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • ⅛ tsp ground nutmeg
  • Small pinch of salt
  • ½ cup cold heavy whipping cream
  • Apple wedges, graham crackers and gingersnaps, for serving

Method

  1. Beat the cream cheese until smooth. Beat in the powdered sugar until no lumps remain, scraping the bowl as needed.
  2. Beat in pumpkin purée, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and salt until evenly blended. If the pumpkin looks unusually watery, briefly drain it in a fine-mesh sieve first.
  3. In a separate chilled bowl, whip the cold cream to medium peaks. Fold it gently into the pumpkin mixture in two additions; do not beat out the air.
  4. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. It should be thick enough to scoop. Spoon into a serving bowl, dust lightly with cinnamon and serve with freshly cut apples, graham crackers and gingersnaps.
  5. For a party, keep the main batch refrigerated and replenish a small serving bowl as needed. Keep cold food at 40°F or below, or follow the time limits below.

Kitchen notes

Plain canned pumpkin gives more consistent moisture than homemade purée. For a firmer dip, chill longer; do not add extra liquid. This is a dip, not a sliceable cheesecake filling.

Allergens: Milk. Graham crackers and gingersnaps commonly contain wheat and may contain other allergens; check labels and keep serving utensils separate when needed.

Storage and serving

Keep refrigerated at 40°F or below and use within 3–4 days. Serve with clean utensils and do not return dip that has been sitting out to the main batch.

Do not leave perishable food out for more than 2 hours, or 1 hour when the temperature is above 90°F. Discard food that exceeds these limits.
